    Join the American Horticultural Society’s (AHS) outstanding team of professionals and find your opportunity to engage, inspire, and activate people of all walks of life to make America a nation of gardeners, a land of gardens.  We seek a Lead Gardener to enhance our current practical on-site horticultural capacity.  This full-time position will play an integral role in maintaining and improving the AHS’s national headquarters at River Farm, a 25-acre garden property overlooking the Potomac River in Alexandria, VA.

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
    Reporting to the Associate Director, Horticulture and River Farm (AD), this position assists with the planning, care, and maintenance of River Farm.  As the Lead Gardener, the incumbent will work closely with the AD to design, develop, and execute seasonal plantings, renovate existing garden spaces, and maintain existing plantings.  With the assistance of interns, volunteers, and additional horticulture staff, the Lead Gardener will be responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of the property.  This position is classified as essential and the incumbent must participate in all emergencies, including but not limited to: storm cleanup, ice removal, and snow removal. Availability for evenings, weekends, and holiday work, as needed, will be required to successfully fulfill the obligations of the position.

    • Performs all general landscaping and gardening tasks, including weeding, invasive control, mulching, watering, edging, seasonal pruning, plant research, selection, and planting, and pest control.
    • Safely operates and is responsible for the proper operation, maintenance, and minor repair of all grounds vehicles and power equipment.
    • Independently trains and manages interns and volunteers in gardening-related activities and assigned projects.
    • Assists with the planning and coordination of the annual Spring Garden Market (plant sale) and additional events, including identifying and interacting with vendors, managing set up and tear down, and preparing the River Farm gardens and grounds.
    • Assists with the scheduling, coordination, and delivery of River Farm tours, providing information and interpretation of the property, its history, gardens, and plant materials.
    • Assists with setup and clean up for special events, including tables and chairs.
    • Assists with and performs snow and ice removal from roads, parking lots, walks and critical garden areas.
    • Maintains a positive attitude and work relationship with all AHS employees, interns, volunteers, and the public by interacting in a manner that is professional, respectful and helpful.
    • Conducts work in accordance with all procedures and guidelines of the American Horticultural Society and River Farm.
    • Documents all work and projects in accordance with departmental standards
    • Works both independently and as part of a team, with minimum supervision.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

    The ideal candidate will demonstrate a personal passion for and knowledge of gardening, horticulture or environmental issues. 

    • Minimum 3 years of hands-on, relevant horticulture work experience.  Experience in public gardening preferred.
    • Excellent knowledge of plant material, landscape/gardening practices, integrated pest management.
    • Strong proficiency and experience in safe operation and care of assorted landscaping and farm equipment, including but not limited to: trucks, tractors, backpack blowers, string trimmers, chainsaws, golf carts/Gators, powered shears, ladders, hand tools, and general garage equipment.
    • Associate or B.S. degree in Horticulture or related field preferred.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
    • Must currently hold, or be able to acquire, a Virginia Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months of hire.
    • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and enjoy public interaction.
    • Ability to independently lift 50 pounds.
    • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, including, rain, snow, and extreme hot and cold temperatures.
    • Ability to push, pull, climb, dig, work on uneven surfaces, and perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
    • Proven experience leading and managing both group and individual projects.
    • Must be legally able to work in the United States.
