This is a full-time position, funded for a three-year term, with long-term potential in mind. It will play a central role in the design and implementation of the AHS’s national and local programmatic initiatives and in shaping strategic partnerships that will carry the organization into its second century.

    Under the leadership of a new President and CEO and a highly energized Board, and in anticipation of its 2022 Centennial, the AHS is undertaking a significant planning initiative to inform the development of a strategic framework and identification of focus areas to guide its efforts. This will include an examination and refinement of its priorities, audiences, programs, and intended impacts.

    We seek a Manager, Programs and National Partnerships (Manager) to help refine our current initiatives and to conceive and implement new programs and strategic partnerships that align with the AHS’s emerging strategy; attract and engage members and funders; and embody our national mission. The incumbent will work closely with the AHS Resource Development division (Membership and Development) to design and communicate an integrated, mutually supportive set of programs, benefits, and offerings for members and other audiences and will guide program design and marketing to build participation and meet net revenue goals.

    The AHS is a national organization with approximately 20,000 members. Current national programs include the Great American Gardeners Awards, National Children and Youth Gardening Symposium, (NCYGS); Reciprocal Admissions Program (RAP), and Seed Program. The AHS also publishes The American Gardener Magazine six times per year as a primary member benefit. The Society is based at River Farm, a 25-acre garden property overlooking the Potomac River in Alexandria, VA. River Farm features a Manor House and surrounding gardens, which are frequently used for events, a children’s garden area, a meadow, and a combination of lightly managed acreage and woods. River Farm is open for self-guided public visits, tours, and a limited number of local member and community programs, such as an annual Spring Garden Market.

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
    Reporting to the President and CEO, the Manager will work with the AHS leadership team and Planning Task Force to develop and implement a national program strategy that embodies and activates the AHS’s mission and brand for its members, potential new audiences, and the various stakeholders and purposes we seek to serve. As a primary means of accomplishing the AHS’s goals, the Manager will be responsible for researching, cultivating, fulfilling, and stewarding national programmatic partnerships and alliances as well as sources of programmatic support. The first year of the term will focus on ideation, investigation, and planning in coordination with the AHS’s Planning Task Force along with implementation of existing AHS programs. Specifically, the Manager will:
    • Contribute programming ideas/approaches and public engagement and impact perspective to the development of a new AHS organizational strategic framework. Serve on Strategic Planning and Centennial Planning taskforces, as assigned.
    • Build AHS credibility and thought leadership by personally providing or securing respected subject matter expertise for development and delivery of programs.
    • Manage planning, marketing, program content development, and implementation of assigned AHS programs, conferences and events, described at www.ahsgardening.org, to achieve mission-related and financial goals.
    • Work with fundraising staff to identify potential sources of support, develop program and project descriptions and budgets. Develop and communicate program rationale and benefits and articulate the case for participation and support.
    • Work with Communications and Membership Teams to develop and implement marketing and outreach campaigns to increase awareness, participation, and ongoing engagement in programs, conferences or events through electronic, printed, and social channels. 
    • Develop and maintain familiarity with the range of organizations and program offerings that populate the national, regional, and local horticultural offerings landscape with an eye toward differentiating the AHS, developing a strong mission delivery promise and value proposition. 
    • Develop, manage, and report on approved monthly and annual budget and program plans, operating to a balanced departmental budget and meeting or exceeding revenue and engagement goals. Regularly evaluate, analyze costs and impact, and refine program initiatives to ensure their alignment with AHS's overall organizational strategies and the needs and interests of AHS's members and stakeholder groups.
    • Supervise one full-time program associate to achieve program objectives
    • Foster interdepartmental teamwork and forge constructive partnerships with other staff members to ensure timely and accurate sharing of information and efficient process management.
    • Other duties as assigned by employer to further the Society’s goals and programmatic activities.

    Qualities, Skills and Abilities:
    • Self-motivated strategic thinker, with the proven project management, organizational skills, and attention to detail required to translate strategies into successful program delivery.
    • Outstanding oral and written communication skills that result in clear, compelling, and concise content.
    • Energetic, assertive, and outgoing persona, with the ability to remain cool, flexible, and resourceful when managing events or in the face of multiple priorities and deadlines. High adaptive capacity, entrepreneurial spirit, and sense of humor will be a good match for the start-up and transformation work envisioned for the next several years.
    • High proficiency with MSOffice suite software and comfort with using various technology and office productivity applications.
    • Able to travel at least 5-6 times per year to staff or present at NCYGS, regional workshops or other stakeholder conferences and events (travel does not exceed 20% of total work time.)

    Knowledge and Background:
    • The ideal candidate will combine a passion for horticulture, the environment, or a related field with demonstrated experience in program design, audience engagement, education or interpretation, accrued through employment history and/or academic coursework. Strong preference will be given to candidates with substantive hands-on knowledge of plants, gardening and horticultural practices, environmental stewardship, and/or closely related topics.
    • Advanced degree, coursework, or certification in a plant-related field of study or in education a plus.
    • Experience developing, managing, and implementing programs, conferences, tradeshows, events. National level non-profit or association experience preferred.
    • Proven success in identifying foundation, government, corporate or individual funding prospects, developing program narratives and project budgets for applications, and evaluating/reporting out on program progress and outcomes.
    • Experience with website content management systems (CMS), online learning management systems (LMS), and/or customer relationship, contact, and fundraising management (CRM) programs such as (Blackbaud NetCommunity and Raiser’s Edge) is strongly desired; facility with Raiser’s Edge and must be demonstrated in the first year of employment.

    The AHS offices are located at River Farm in Alexandria, VA, with offers complimentary parking and easy access to bike and walking trails along the Potomac. Preference will be given to candidates able to reside and work in the Washington, DC-metro area.  Consideration will, however, also be given to highly qualified remote applicants who are able to i) regularly travel in a cost-effective manner to the AHS offices; ii) have proximity to airport or train transportation needed to meet the position’s travel requirements, and iii) can provide a dedicated and secure internet-connected workspace.  Relocation expenses are not available.
